Somatic Awareness in Therapy NYC & Brooklyn

There is a principle in Katonah yoga
philosophy that has always stayed with
me: nature reveals its intelligence
through pattern, and pattern repeats.

Most of us relate to our patterns as failures — evidence of something wrong, proof that we're stuck. In somatic therapy NYC clients often discover that patterns aren't malfunctions. They're adaptations. They formed because they worked. And they wait, not to be eliminated, but to be understood.g

The Body In The Room
What Is Somatic Awareness in Therapy?

Most talk therapy stays from the neck up.

We become very fluent in narrating our experience. Articulate about our history, skilled at identifying patterns, capable of real insight. And sometimes that fluency becomes its own way of staying at a distance from the thing itself — understanding everything about why we do something without ever quite feeling our way through it.

Somatic awareness brings the body into the conversation. Not as a separate practice, but as another layer of attention — one that I bring to every session. The tension that appears when a difficult subject comes up. The shift in breath before a hard thing is said. The way emotion lives physically before it becomes thought. These aren't incidental. They're often where the most important information lives.

My background in yoga and body-based practice shapes how I work. I'm trained to notice what the body is doing alongside what's being said — and to name it, gently, when it seems useful. That dimension of the work deepens self-awareness in ways that insight alone often can't reach. It tends to be the piece that makes change feel not just understood, but real.

What You Can Expect

You can't think your way out of a pattern you can't yet feel. But once you can feel it arriving — before it takes over — you begin to have a choice you didn't have before.

Slowing Down the Process

Somatic awareness in therapy is not rushed. There is space to notice what’s happening in real time, both mentally and physically.

Bringing Awareness to the Body

At times, attention may gently shift toward physical sensations—what you notice in your body, how it changes, and what it might be communicating.

Integrating with Talk Therapy

This is not separate from psychodynamic work. Somatic awareness is integrated into the conversation, adding another layer of understanding rather than replacing it.

You Might Relate If...

"I understand everything about why I do this. So why can't I stop?"

Insight is necessary but not always sufficient. When understanding hasn't translated into change, it's often because the pattern hasn't been worked with at the level where it actually lives — in the body, in the nervous system, in the space between stimulus and response.

What Shifts In The Work

Over time, you begin to catch the pattern earlier - not just recognize it in retrospect but feel it arriving. That gap between the trigger and the reaction widens. Curiosity replaces urgency. You stop fighting yourself and start working with what's actually there.

That's where lasting change tends to live.
